Immerse yourself in ancient Egypt at the time of the pharaohs.
It is night. The smell of lotus blossoms, pine trees, spices and the waters of the Nile is in the air. A warm wind blows and the soft chirping of crickets announces the sunrise at the gates of the royal palace, at the foot of the temple.
The Ethiopian king's daughter AIDA and the senior officer of the Egyptian army Radames, lovers of two rival states, meet secretly on the banks of the Nile. The cry of the priestly falcon, startles the two lovers and AIDA flees back to the Pharaonic Palace, where she resumes her duty as servant to the Princess Amneris. Radames is chosen to lead the Egyptian army in the upcoming war, which he enters with the blessing of the gods. Only victory would enable him to ask for AIDA's hand in marriage.
The Egyptian king's daughter Amneris has also fallen in love with Radames. And after the triumphal entry, after the Egyptians have won the battle and honoured Radames, the Pharaoh announces the marriage of Amneris and Radames, which puts the love between AIDA and Radames in danger.
Among the prisoners brought along is Amonasro, the king of Ethiopia, disguised as a simple soldier! Only AIDA recognises her father. She almost reveals her lineage as the daughter of the king of Ethiopia - but is stopped by her father. Only unrecognised has he a chance to survive.
AIDA is desperate. Who should she choose? For the love of Radames or the love of her fatherland Ethiopia? Amonasro gets AIDA to seduce Radames with the aim of finding out the secret free path to Ethiopia. When Radames finally gives in and reveals the way, he has no idea that Amneris is listening in. Amneris has no choice: while Amonasro and AIDA flee, she has Radames arrested for treason. She tries in vain to change Radames' mind: if he forgets AIDA and marries her, he will not be condemned - she can save him!
Radames, however, remains true to his love for AIDA and voluntarily surrenders himself to the priests.
On the way to Ethiopia, AIDA's father is killed in an accident and she decides to return. Amneris has been unable to prevent the death sentence and has to watch Radames disappear into the crypt under the temple, where death awaits him. Shortly before the crypt is sealed, AIDA enters the temple and meets Amneris. Both women, AIDA and Amneris, look into each other's eyes and understand that love wins: Amneris' love for Radames is greater than her hatred for AIDA. She no longer blocks her way and allows AIDA to join Radames in the crypt.
And while Amneris returns to pharaonic life, AIDA and Radames experience what are probably their most beautiful hours: Free, happy and ready for the next life.
